We could forgive them for thinking that during the summer, however, now that winter is looming, we’re here to tell you about all of the mouth-watering menus that our plant based bistros are offering; replacing salads with stews, wraps with roasts and so on. This is your veggie guide to Liverpool this winter.
Leaf is one of the most popular spots along the prolific Bold St, especially in the autumn and winter months. This is largely due to the endless choices of warming teas on offer, as well as the soft lighting and cosy décor. However, it’s not just the tea that will be warming you up from the inside out, it’s the autumnal twist on their already irresistible menu. The Cumin Roast Aubergine is top of the bill for the Vegan part of the menu, with Mushroom Gnocchi and a Veggie/Vegan Full English not far behind. On top of this we have a Gluten-Free menu and an exclusive Christmas menu that includes a Cashew Nut Roast and Vegan, Dark Chocolate Brownie. If you want to be comfortable yet quirky, then order yourself a pot of tea, settle in to a Chesterfield and browse through the options on offer.
Egg Café is a staple of the veggie scene and has become the master of the home-cooked belly filler. Anyone who thinks that veggies live off carrots and hummus needs to be treated to some of the substantial scran that Egg Café delivers. The Sunday Roast is the pinnacle of their menu, with daily specials such as a ‘fake’ Pulled Pork Pie and Vegan Scouse also getting in on the spotlight. If the lasagne is ever up on that specials board when you visit this venue, snap that opportunity up there and then!
Our Kitchen was the ‘Best All Rounder’ for our most recent vegan and veggie guides to the city, so it would be wrong for us to leave them out of the seasonal festivities. With this elegant addition to Bold Street being relatively new, they are still trying new and exciting things. Curry Fridays have been going down a storm, as well as live acoustic music. Whether for an occasion or just a catch up, there are few settings as sleek yet as homely as this. The handpicked wines and vegan desserts are irresistibly well matched, this being the perfect getaway during the winter months.
Located on Parr Street, The Brink often gets over looked when it comes to searching for a vegetarian feast, however, with the launch of a new winter menu, we couldn’t leave this place out. Daily special such as a Pie of the Day, or Soup of the Day, scream out to be devoured and satisfy your stomach. Everything is homemade, in keeping with the ethos of the venue, warming the heart as much as the belly. Recent months has seen all sorts of gatherings take place at The Brink including yoga classes, guitar lessons, comedy nights, gigs and a night called Recovery’s Got Talent, celebrating those recovering from addiction who have untapped talents. Settle down, enjoy a cake and a coffee from their regularly rotating selection and huddle up with like-minded people this winter.
As Christmas draws ever-closer L1 and the surrounding area will be transformed into a winter wonderland, especially when the Bar Hütte sets up shop outside of John Lewis. This will make the view from the already glamorous upstairs restaurant, The Cosy Club, even more special. The view and décor will only be outdone by the scrumptiously satisfying sustenance the menu has to offer. The L1 eatery offers vegan menu, a gluten-free menu and a ‘normal’ menu. However, due to the time of year, we’re here to talk about the party menu. Cosy Club is made for Christmas gatherings and parties, and the menu just backs that up. There is something for everyone, however, since we’re focussing on us veggie folk, we can look forward to a belly filling Mac ‘n’ Cheese, or a Moroccan Tabbouleh and Courgette Risotto for the vegans in the party. Like we’ve said, sustenance and substance when eating out, as a vegan can be hard, so these hearty mains are everything that you need at this time of year.
Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian word that describes a feeling of cosiness and comfort and, these days, has inspired interior design so much so that we’re even adopting the Danish culture. Nowhere has adopted it more than the business districts most impressive Yoga centre and kitchen, White Wolf. The soft lighting, minimal furniture and fleecy textures make you want to curl up into your seat as you sip on a Chai Latte, waiting for your Yoga session. The refined winter menu includes fan favourites, the Big Boston Breakfast and Scrambled Tofu, as well as new additions such as a vegan, Grilled Sloppy Joe sandwich and daily specials. The Breakfast Club is the kitchen’s latest endeavour; getting those wintry mornings off to the best start possible.
Love Thy Neighbour is a favourite of us veggie devotees here at The Guide Liverpool. Ever since we compiled a list of the best places in the city for plant-based alternatives, we’ve found it tough to beat the breakfast at this Bold Street new comer. So, the breakfast is good, as is the brunch, and that is reason enough to get down there, however, it’s the new menu launched at the turn of the season that we want to tell you about. From 5pm eaters can enjoy Small Plates, Large Plates, Buddha Bowls, Skewers and, our favourite, Cheats. All the Buddha Bowls are veggie friendly, including a Sweet Potato and Spiced Chickpea option and Beetroot with Falafel bowls that are both vegan. Loaded Sweet Potato Fries grabs our attention in the Cheat section whilst a Goats Cheese Risotto takes the spotlight for the Large Plates. If the evening meals are even half as good as their early rising cousins, then we’re in for one hell of a treat.
