The Liverpool Foodie: Ten restaurants in Liverpool you need to visit in 2024
The Liverpool Foodie

Liverpool’s hospitality scene needs to be recognised world-wide – that’s just a fact. Not only should we be known for our rich musical and cultural heritage, our stunning buildings, and football… but also for dishing out some world class scran!

“Hiya guys it’s Chris from The Liverpool Foodie” – as 2023 draws to a close, I’m taking a look back on some of the incredible dishes, created by our extremely talented restaurants in Liverpool, that I’ve had the pleasure to eat this year.

Since I started my food blog journey in 2019, the city has evolved so much, and as born and bread Scouser, I couldn’t be more proud of what Liverpool has become… there is literally no place like it on earth!

So let’s get to it – check out these 10 places you need to make sure to visit:

Doux Chaton – Renshaw Street

If you’re wanting to try some “Pho-nomenal” Vietnamese food then you have to check Doux Chaton a boss little hidden gem on Renshaw Street.

Bad jokes aside, the food in here is out of this world, busting with flavour, massive portions, and very reasonably priced!

It’s a family run restaurant and dishes up good food with no airs and graces, and everything is so fresh! You have to try the Vietnamese Spring Rolls, as well as the Banh Xeo – which is an egg pancake with pork and prawns inside, it’s so good!

Be brave and dip your spring rolls into their dad’s homemade chilli oil… he has to wear protective gear when making it, it’s that spicy! You can cool off from it with a glass of Vietnamese Iced Coffee!

Dostana – Woolton Village

There’s nothing like a curry to warm you up during these cold months, so a trip to Dostana in Woolton Village will be well worth it.

Some of the locals still refer to it as The Raj, but whatever you call it, this family restaurant celebrated its 50th anniversary this year!

I tried Chaat Bombs from here for the first time and they were delicious!

Chows Food Truck by Parkgate Fish & Chips (Cains Brewery Village)

If you’ve been to Bongo’s Bingo lately you might have noticed Chow’s Food Truck parked outside of CONTENT.

Whatever you do, do not miss out on ordering from this place!

They’re from the famous Parkgate Fish and Chips over on The Wirral – and I’m made up they’ve brought their high quality homemade fish and chips, as well as a fantastic salt and pepper range to Liverpool.

It’s no wonder these guys win all sorts of awards – they also have a truck parked outside of The Hilton in Liverpool ONE.

Johnson’s Butchers – Mill Street

Ok – so I might be cheating with this one… but it needs to be mentioned because Johnson’s (Johno’s) Scouse Pies are literally out of this world!

Johno’s is an institution around Dingle/Toxteth. They’ve been serving the local community for over 100 years, and current owners Mike and Esther have been there for over 40 years, having started when they were teenagers.

The meat and potato pies are the one! It’s a bit of nostalgia for me with every bite, but there’s nothing better than introducing them to someone who has never had one before.

Whack a bit of brown or chilli sauce on them in the house… or if you can’t wait and want to scran it in the street they’re still sound without!

Mahoe Blue – Aigburth Road

If you’re wanting an authentic taste of the Caribbean then there’s no need to get a flight… just get down to Aigburth Road.

Chefs Andrea and Stephan Lebbie opened Mahoe Blue on Aigburth Road in December last year and since then they’ve had diners coming from all over the city for a taste of their dishes.

The spicy sautéed mutton skewers are HOT but the depth of flavour is just incredible, and the curry goat is just stunning. Now there is a wait on food because everything is made fresh, but trust me it’s worth the wait!

Everything is made with so much love.

Buyer’s Club – Hardman Street

Freshly made pasta just hits differently, and Buyer’s Club are not playing around when it comes to good fresh made pasta!

It’s a cosy place to go in the Winter and in the Summer their yard is a proper little sun trap. The food and drinks are always on form.

Not only are these guys known for their incredible pasta but their pizza’s are also sensational… make sure you try the King Prawn Spaghetti with Chilli and Garlic.

Polpetta – Baltic Market

Set up by Meatball “Molly” McCann and Macro Chef’s Joel McCarthy, the two have been wanting to collaborate for a few years and actually decided to bring Polpetta to life after a few Guinnesses!

The quality of the food is, as Molly herself would say, “Heavy” – the signature meatballs are huge and the pasta is absolutely delicious. Definitely one of the standout dishes are their subs – massive sandwiches that would make Joey from Friends weep with happiness.

Big Lola’s – Smithdown Road

@the_liverpool_foodie

If you’re looking for a proper authentic Mexican in Liverpool, then get yourselves to @Big_Lolas_Taqueria on Smithdown Road. They’re also in Duke Street Market and the new Chester Market! Love these new menu items guys, smashing it as usual! #BigLolas #TheLiverpoolFoodie #FoodInLiverpool #Mexican #MexicanFood #Fyp #fypシ #fypシ゚viral #foryou #foryoupage #foryourpage *said Tacos instead of nachos halfway through… but you know what I mean 😅😅

♬ Dreams (2004 Remaster) – Fleetwood Mac

If you’re wanting a taste of Mexico – Big Lola’s have got you covered.

I’m still trying to figure out how they can make a simple dish like a bowl of nachos mind-blowingly good!

They have recently started a new menu which includes Birria Taco’s… make sure you have your napkins at the ready!

The Bagelry – Nelson Street

The aroma of freshly baked bagels fills the air as soon as you walk into this little restaurant.

Not only do they have a variety of bagels for you to buy and take away like the famous Rainbow Bagel, Cinnamon & Raisin, Jalapeño & Cheddar and the Poppy Seed Bagel, but also you can order them with delicious fillings… and they’re jam-packed.

The Mega Stack is not one to miss out on if you’re looking for a breakfast to set you up for the day, it comes with sausage, bacon and hash brown, and you can add a fried egg to it too!

Don’t forget to get some hash browns and an extra side of cheese sauce for dunking!

Find out more HERE.

Press Bros – Lark Lane

You will never need to go to that famous fast food chain for a muffin again!

Get on Press Bros’ Sausage Patty Melt immediately if not sooner… there spot on Lark Lane is perfect for fuelling up in the morning with great food and boss coffee, and then popping over the road to Sefton Park for a little walk!

They also do pastries from The Butterholic – if you know, you know!
