Look at all of the virtual events Tate Liverpool is bringing us this Autumn

Tate Liverpool has a programme packed full of online events this Autumn inspired by the gallery’s Don McCullin and Mikhail Karikis: Ferocious Love exhibitions.

Listen to discussions on issues surrounding the work of Don McCullin, from ethics in photography to the role and representation of women within the documentary photography industry, or take inspiration from the photographer’s arresting landscape imagery to create your own prints in one of our online workshops. Engage with themes of climate activism focused on in Ferocious Love and find your activist voice with Liverpool Socialist Singers in an online workshop.

On Thursday 15 October from 18.30 – 20.00, Women and Documentary Photography is an online Zoom panel discussion Chaired by Dr Pippa Oldfield, academic and photography curator. She will be joined by Newsha Tavakolian, who has covered wars in Iraq and a range of social issues; Alison Baskerville, a documentary photographer, artist and former soldier; and Rena Effendi, an award-winning documentary photographer who has worked for the New Yorker, New York Times, TIME and many others. The three photographers will offer new interpretations of the history of conflict photography from the perspective of women in conflict and documentary photography, exploring the role women have played within it.

The Ethics of the Image on Thursday 12 November from 19.00 – 20.00 will tackle some of the vital concerns around photojournalism, the ethical responsibilities of photographers and editors and the agency of the subject. Guest speakers include photographer Anthony Luvera along with writer and director of NYU’s Gallatin Photojournalism Lab Lauren Walsh, and former picture editor of The Observer and independent photography consultant Jennie Ricketts.

Or on Tuesday 24 November from 14.00 – 15.00, find out more about the life and work of British photographer Don McCullin in a Curator’s Talk. Co-curator Tamar Hemmes will give a fascinating insight into the planning of the Don McCullin exhibition at Tate Liverpool, along with stories behind some of the iconic photographs currently on display in the gallery.

On Saturday 28 November from 10.30 – 12.30, the online Something From Nothing Printmaking Watch Party is a chance for participants to get creative at home using the everyday objects that surround them. Or, book tickets to enjoy Afternoon Tea on the Royal Albert Dock in the Tate Liverpool café, surrounded by the iconic designs of Sir Peter Blake.

To coincide with Mikhail Karikis’s Ferocious Love on display in the gallery, visitors are invited to hear about the process behind the commission, or play around with some of the techniques used to create the audio-visual installation. From 14.00 – 15.30 on Sunday 25 October, Liverpool Socialist Singers, the group behind the stunning audio track featured in Ferocious Love will host an online workshop that will teach participants new ways to use their voices.
