Did somebody order autumn? Cosy roasts feel like they’re heading our way, so while we decide if it’s too soon to dig out our big coats, here are 11 things to do in Liverpool this week …

Deacon Blue at the M&S Bank Arena

Deacon Blue have a special relationship with Liverpool, it’s their favourite place to play after their hometown of Glasgow, so gigs here are always amazing. They’re at the Arena this Friday with a Very Best Of tour, packed with all the hits plus songs from their new album for what will be a fantastic night.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at Liverpool Empire

The Lightning Thief - Liverpool Empire

Adapted from Rick Riordan’s bestseller The Lightning Thief, which has become a global phenomenon, this musical adaptation broke records with its run in London. Now it’s coming to the Empire from this Tuesday to Saturday with a tale of mythical monsters and epic adventure that’s ideal for all the family.

Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell at the Playhouse Theatre

For ballet fans, this is an absolute must-see – Matthew Bourne productions are never anything but brilliant and this one is an award winner. It’s set in 1930s Soho, where lonely hearts come together at the Midnight Bell tavern to play out their different stories and endings. At the Playhouse until Saturday.

Food at The Pen Factory

Scouse at The Pen Factory

If you’re up on Hope Street and looking for great food, head downstairs to the Pen Factory right next door to the Everyman. It’s got a menu of classics including traditional scouse, fish and chips and homemade burgers as well as daily specials, or there are small plates too if that’s what you fancy.

Tours at Hill Dickinson Stadium

Everton’s new stadium is a beauty so if you’re a Blues fan and want to see it for the first time or get behind the scenes access, you need to book one of the tours. You’ll be able to go in the dressing room and press room, tunnel and pitchside, and have incredible views from the Upper Tier of the Bowl.

Liverpool Cathedral Tower Experience

Talking of spectacular views, they don’t come any better than those from Liverpool Cathedral tower. The tower itself is over 300ft high but once you’ve reached the top, via the world’s highest and heaviest peal of bells, it’s well worth the climb to get a 360-degree aerial look at the city’s most famous landmarks.

Heritage Open Days – venues across the city

Heritage Open Days are back this month and they’re a chance to see inside some of our region’s most interesting historic buildings, which are often not open to the public, with no admission charge. They started on Friday, but run until Sunday September 21 so there’s still plenty of time to go exploring.

Visit Blackstock Market

There’s so much going on at Blackstock Market, that’s what makes it as popular as it is. It’s a huge home for comedy, with Hot Waster Comedy Club shows every week, but there’s also live music, food vendors, footy on big screens, a choice of bars including the rooftop and free Sunday family fun days, 10-1pm.

We did mention it was getting to roast season, and The Watering Can has one of the best in Liverpool. Choose from chicken, rump of beef or mushroom bean and nut roast, served with roasties, maple syrup & thyme roasted carrots and greens. Don’t miss their much-raved about truffle cauli cheese side too.

Drinks at Commune

If you’ve not been to Commune in the Fabric District yet then definitely get it on your to-go list because it’s a really friendly and inclusive independent space for live music, vinyl, films, art and drinks. It’s open Thursday to Sunday, from 3pm til late, and you’ll find it on Constance Street just off London Road.

Treasure: History Unearthed at Museum of Liverpool

Everyone loves finding something special, and this new exhibition at the Museum of Liverpool features the North West’s largest display of archaeological treasure. It’s a chance to see and learn about incredible finds, from Roman rings, to Viking silver and Medieval coins, and think about what treasure really means.
